Temples of Convenience presents one hundred-and-twelve colour photographs of extraordinary and unusual “conveniences” by Lucinda Lambton. These startling photographs provide an entertaining visual history of the lavatory from a Roman twenty-seater through James II’s velvet “thunder box” to the imaginative extravagancies of the Victorian era and beyond.
All manner of conveniences are included -in addition to the great varieties of lavatory there are urinals, chamber pots and pot cupboards, bourdaloues and commodes. Extraordinary washbasins and baths are also shown.
The introduction and captions provide a pungent survey of two thousand years of sanitary and insanitary habits.
Lucinda Lambton, a professional photographer for the last sixteen years, has had work published in many newspapers, magazines and books. She drove over 40.000 miles in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland to take the photographs for Temples of Convenience.
