SINOPSIS:

Max Ernst is the last of the German romantics. Romanticism is native to Germany, it is in essence a trans- Rhenan inspiration, a yearning nourished by the mountains and great forests there. The apotheosis of romanticism is found in the brief life of the poet Novalis (1772-1801), one of Ernst´s spiritual forbears. Today Novalis is chiefly remembered for his Hymns to the Night, prose-poems of astonishing purity, full of that deep, dazzling darkness Which St John of the Cross said characterized certain types of mystical experience; and for his Pollen, a book of aphorisms, one of which managed to condense all the vague intimations and longings of the romantics into a single pithy credo-  “When we dream that we are dreaming we are close to waking”- used by Poe as the epigraph to one of his stories. For Novalis there was no contradiction between the innerand the outer world: “What is outside me is right inside me, is mine, and vice versa,” and “We dream of journeys through the universe, but is the universe not within us? We do not realize the profundities of our spiritis. Inward is the  direction of the mystic path. Within us or nowhere is eternity with its words of past and future.” Novalis´contemporary Schelling took up the refrain: “Nature is mind made visible and mind is nature made invisible.” Such heady idealism was based on the philosophy of Fichte.
