I wanted this book to be a record of the 20 years of the Cracow Theatre Reminiscences. At the same time, however, I wanted it to speak at large about the phenomenon that the students’ theatre was, and the alternative theatre is. The book is not to close or sum up anything, because there are no grounds for it when looking from a wider perspective, beyond the Reminiscences. My aim was to bring to mind (by presenting passages of criticism) the language and spirit of the performances from before many years, but at the same time to describe this Festival and its participants by quoting evewitnesses. The aim was to have been such. In fact, the material included in this book is divided into three distinct parts.
The documentary part (I hope it is solid) pictures the rhythm of the festival that it followed throughout the years. Sometimes it was modest, with very few participants from outside Cracow, and sometimes was fully representative, abundant and versatile. In the recent years it was predominantly such, and let’s hope it will remain so.
