SINOPSIS:

The origins of the music hall are to be found in the Song and Supper Rooms of Regency and early Victorian London. In the smoke-filled cellars of the Coal Hole, off the Strand, and similar establishments, boisterous parties of young men-about-town would bellow out the choruses of favourite songs which were often bawdy parodies of popular ballads of the time. These places attracted the severe disapproval of the staid mid-Victorians, and the songs sung there were consigned to the bonfire. No record of them seemed to have survived. A cache of the songbooks, however, has survived in the British Museum and a selection from them is now reprinted for the first time. They throw valuable light upon the type of entertainment from which the music hall sprang, and upon social life in England in the 1830s.

Examples of the charmingly lubricious illustrations to the song books are reproduced, as well as some of the original music to which they were to be sung, so that readers of today may, if they wish, sing these songs themselves.
